Weekly Football News 3/11 – 8/11:
The draw between Arsenal and Liverpool was the major event in Premier League game week 11. Liverpool refused to lose in another derby, and the defence seems Klopp’s principal feature to win the title this season. On the other hand, Manchester City humiliated Southampton with 6-1. Guardiola’s team showed its supremacy with an excellent performance from attackers like Aguero, Sterling and Sane. Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United won Crystal Palace, Wolves and Bournemouth respectively. The top of the Premier League is debatable without a clear favourite now. The next Manchester derby between City and United is a crucial match of the season.
Barcelona was the winner of the game week 11 in La Liga. The Catalans won 3-2 against Rayo Vallecano, while Atletico Madrid and Sevilla lost 2 points against Leganes and Real Sociedad respectively.
At Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid won 2-0 against Real Valladolid with the wonder kid Vinicius’ crucial goal in the 82nd minute. Barcelona is 4 points ahead of the second place, and the question is if Atletico Madrid, Sevilla or Real Madrid can catch them in the rest of the season. Messi’s absence seems beneficial for Barcelona which shows that the phenomenon of ‘Messi-dependence’ is over (read more).
Juventus win against Cagliari with 3-1 was more difficult than the final score. Allegri’s team was static without fantasy and creativity, but the quality of Juventus’ players made the difference. On the other hand, Inter and Napoli humiliated Genoa and Empoli with 5-0 and 5-1 respectively in a festival of goals in Serie A. The top of Serie A is not in danger now for Juventus. Nevertheless, Inter and Napoli seem more fresh and flexible to play fast attacking football.
Bayern Munich’s draw against Freiburg in Allienz Arena was the considerable surprise in Bundesliga. Niko Kovac is still in danger (read more), and the club’s performances are still too disappointing. In contrast, Borussia Dortmund won Wolfsburg, and BVB is now 4 points ahead of Bayern Munich. The next fixture between them is one of the most crucial matches of the season.
Liverpool’s defeat in Serbia against FC Crvena Zvezda demonstrates the complexity of Group C. For instance, the first Napoli is only 2 points ahead of the fourth Crvena Zvezda. In Group H, Manchester United won Juventus win 1-2 in Turin in a dramatic finish with two goals from the Reds in the last 5 minutes of the game. Jose Mourinho celebrated this win ironically when the match was over against the Juventus’ fans. Thus, the first position is still questionable in this group, and everything can change in the last two fixtures.
