The season 2018/19 in La Liga shows a great suspense so far. With just 4 points difference among the first six clubs, La Liga offers one of the most unpredictable seasons of the last years. The following image demonstrates the above issue clearly:
The arrival of Solari has brought the happiness back to Madrid. Not because the style of football has been more attractive, but because it is more effective. Real Madrid has four straight wins with 15 goals for and just two goals against. The change in the effectiveness of scoring goals is clear, while Karim Benzema has found his good form again. Solari also uses the youngsters of Real Madrid very often including Odriozola, Reguilon, Ceballos, Vinicius and Javi Sanchez. Especially for Vinicius case, the pearl of Real Madrid has not played under Lopetegui’s instructions. Now Solari seems to trust him a lot, and as he claimed recently:
“Solari has always helped me since I came to Madrid.”
The rest of the season will reveal if Real Madrid continues in the same way. However, Marcelo, Varane Carvajal and Casemiro are returning from their injuries soon. Therefore the upcoming weeks may be as successful as the previous two.
The poor start of the season belongs to the past for Simeone’s team. Atletico Madrid shows consistency now, and they are only one point behind Barcelona. Griezmann is on an excellent condition, and the vigorous style of Diego Costa compose the best attacking couple in La Liga. Meanwhile, Oblak, Godin and Gimenez synthesise the protected wall for Atletico Madrid with just eight goals conceded in 12 games. Consequently, Atletico Madrid is based on three key features to win La Liga this season:
- The Griezmann – Diego Costa duo
- The in-depth bench
The impending fixture against Barcelona at Wanda Metropolitano is a crucial test for Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid to prove they are favourite for the title.
Barcelona’s defeat against Betis at Camp Nou was an alarm for Ernesto Valverde. La Liga title is a long race, and nothing has finished yet. Barcelona is now just one point ahead of Sevilla and Atletico Madrid. The return of Lionel Messi after three weeks was not successful because Betis was sensational and considerably effective against Ter Stegen. The ‘Messi-dependence’ effect was revealed again but from its negative perspective. The Argentinian superstar returned
During the week Barcelona revealed problems with Ousmane Dembele regarding his addiction to video games. The 21-year-old World Cup winner has been disappointing since his arrival in Barcelona, and as the time goes by his career with the Catalans is being disputed. Apart from that, Barcelona faces severe problems in defence with the absence of Umtiti and Vermaelen, while the only available central defenders are Lenglet and Pique. In the next derby against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona has to prove they are the clear favourite to win La Liga this season.
The most impressive surprise of the season is Sevilla. According to Whoscored.com, the team of Pablo Machin shows a notable consistency in La Liga, apart from creativity and fast forward football. The formation of 3-5-2 is Sevilla’s differentiation among the other top clubs in the league. However, the loan transfer of Andre Silva from AC Milan is the key in Sevilla’s position. The Portuguese striker is a goal scoring machine this season with 7 goals in 11 appearances in La Liga so far.
Sevilla has started amazingly this season. Nevertheless, it is tough to remain on the top until the end. History has shown, especially in La Liga, that after Christmas clubs like Sevilla or Espanyol start declining. Sooner or later, Sevilla will prove if this rule will be broken or not.
