During the last twenty years, Borussia Dortmund has faced intense emotional moments of its history, either positive or negative. From the Champions League trophy in 1996/97 in Munich, on the verge of bankruptcy in 2003/04 and then double winners in the season 2011/12.

Nowadays, Dortmund strives to achieve the club’s financial prosperity and avoid any possible bankruptcy. The investment on talented youth footballers from the academies as well as the sales of their best players including Dembele, Gotze, Gundogan, Hummels and Aubameyang have increased the club’s budget remarkably. Although transfers played a crucial role in Dortmund’s financial welfare, additional factors such as TV marketing, Advertising, Retail and Match operations contributed to increase the club’s revenues (see the graph below).

According to BVB.de, the Executive Director of the club, Thomas Treß, revealed that UEFA Champions League was the most lucrative source of income.

“The greatest source of income was the marketing revenue from participating in the UEFA Champions League at €51 million.”

Apparently, the management of the German club to invest in young players and build a strong team in Bundesliga under the instructions of Jurgen Klopp has been considered profitable in the last years.

However, as the years go by, Dortmund cannot compete Bayern Munich on the Bundesliga, and the performance on the field is at the same level. The second place is the most realistic target for Borussia Dortmund, but even so, the club does not face financial problems, is in the first places of the league and participates every year in UEFA Champions League.

Almost thirteen years ago the club could have been disappearing and now the club’s annual turnover exceeds 400€ million. Even if the first place in Bundesliga is impossible, the financial prosperity that club’s management sustains is the most important aspect for Borussia Dortmund to avoid potential nightmares as in 2004. And through the integration of young talents maybe Dortmund can find the next Lewandowski or Mario Gotze and be more competitive for the title in Bundesliga.
